History of Events

The Hungarian Cultural Association of Wolverhampton is a
new organization. It’s beginnings goes back to 2004 and follows another society which traces its origins to the aftermath of the 1956 uprising and the arrival of many Hungarian as refugees in the West Midlands.
At that time they were made very welcome in Britain and consequently made their homes here while keeping contacts as a group. Being in touch with each other helped in learning how to live and work in a strange new country. That was almost 50 years ago and, as the years passed, the new comers became British and raised families.
Today's new generation of British-Hungarians have different life styles and intersts from their parents.
For the older members of the existing society friendship and mutual help become more and more important thus other activities gradually declined and were finally discontinued.
The old society was called The Wolverhampton Mágyar club and is now discontinued and no longer active.
A new society was needed to be a local link to Hungarian culture and traditions. Membership of the Wolverhampton Hungarian Cultural Association is not restricted to those who were born in Hungary or who have parents born there.
The new society provides opportunity for anybody to get and to keep an interst in Hungary;the place, its people and its culture. Also as more interst in Hungarians have come to the area and more locals are visiting Hungary people have more interst in the Hungarian society.
The Association is engaged in several cultural and social actvities. Great importance is given in the progrmme to events in the spirit of tradition. Commemoration on historic dates like June the 4th (Trianon Treaty) 15th of march and October 23rd together with the celebration of Christmas and Easter in religious context are part of our calendar.
In the social field we organize gatherings and dances where the music and the food are added attractions.
Members of the Association individually or collectively are also of assistance where their help is needed, assisting new Hungarians travelling to the west and wanting to settle in Wolverhampton, those without English are helped with interpretation and there are plans for language instruction on a small scale. The HCA keeps contact with similar organizations and with offical bodies and cooperates to promote Hungarian culture, to stand by compatriots and to maintain the good name of the country and its people.
